The Centennial State is best known for its hulking mountains, the tallest in the Rockies. As well as ample opportunities for hikers to go off exploring, Colorado's towering peaks have some of North America's best snow, with the south of the state home to a string of high-end resorts and easily accessible slopes. There are classic desert canyons in the northwest of the state, while in the southwest there are several important Native American sites, particularly in the Mesa Verde National Park. Denver, the Mile High City, has a growing reputation as an arts hub, with plenty of opportunities to escape to the surrounding hills and indulge in some rafting or cycling if things start to feel hectic.
